Whittington C.C. | 123/8 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Washingtonians, Yesterday we had another epic battle with the Whittington. Both sides struggled to assemble a team, but we managed to put 10 guys on the field against their 11, with the help of new players or ring-ins on both sides. On our side we had Chris Parau, who played in the same fixture last year, plus Dan Hayes and Ian Moore who played their first games for the Wash - welcome aboard! Whittington won the toss and elected to field in a timed game. We made a good start, but Nick Goldreich went early to a miracle catch at short backward square. Scoring was difficult in places because of the thick grass. Chris Parau scored a quick 8 before falling and bringing Brian White to the wicket. Brian shared two very good partnerships with Andrew Walsh who scored 40 and Dan Hayes with 33. A few quick wickets before tea and a brilliant century from Brian saw the innings closed with a smart declaration from Max at 217 for 7 (well, no-one was padded up). The Wash bowled accurately and the fielding was superb - quick thinking from Nick Goldreich created a runout for the first wicket. Creed followed up with two excellent bowleds. Walsh, Marsh & Hayes followed with wickets of their own as Max rang the changes and set aggressive fields. However John & Ali dug in for the Whittington and proved very difficult to dislodge. A late wicket from Nick brought panic for the home side, but alas they managed to hold out to draw with 2 wickets to spare. All up it was a very hard fought game, in which everyone contributed and we can consider it a draw-win if such a thing exists.
