Sunday 14th June 2015 vs Finchley CC C.C.

Wash turned over by Finchley

Washington C.C. 187 all out
Finchley CC C.C. 188 for 3 (32 overs)

 Matt Cheviott reporting:

Washington played a conference tie against Finchley CC on Sunday at North Midd, and were soundly beaten by a margin of 7 wickets.

“We didn’t play badly”, said skipper Clinton Dugmore after the game, “but their star batsman made the most of the life we gave him when he had only scored 30; his century made all the difference”.

Dugmore had earlier won the toss and elected to bat first.  A lot of batsmen got a start on a stopping pitch – the ball holding up a little on a wicket tinged with green after recent rain.

Andrew Walsh (21) set about the opposition bowling to good effect hitting a series of boundaries, as he and fellow opener Matthew Cragoe (13) added 41 for the first wicket from 8 overs; however, both departed bowled, and they were soon followed by Tony Harris (15) and Aff Naseem (7), both caught. At 99-4, things were not disastrous, and two innings of quality in the middle order – from Sam Clark (31) and Dugmore (48)  - seemed to set Washington up for a decent final total.

But once Peter Kloss (14) had departed, Wash lost wickets quickly as they tried to maximize the harvest from the last few overs.  Nick Kripps  (0), Max Murrain (9), Toby Mariner (2) all perished in the quest for runs, leaving Russell Pendry unbeaten on 2, and Wash all out for 188.

The early overs of the Finchley innings featured bowling as good as anything produced by wash this season.  Murrain (1-34) bowled with accuracy and control from the pavilion end, whilst Dugmore (0-33) generated real pace.  The Finchley reply started very slowly, and when Murrain bowled opener Duncan Wash looked well in the game.

However the game turned an over later when the same bowler, normally such an outstanding fielder, missed a relatively straightforward return catch off Jaichand, who went on to score 113.

A brisk spell from Mariner (0-48), and a turn from Kloss (0-17), proved unavailing as Wash sought to counter attack; instead it was the spinners who got the wickets -- Kripps (1-29) courtesy of a stumping by Walsh, and Pendry (1-15) from a redemptive catch by Murrain.

But it wasn’t enough, and Finchley, led by their stylish centurion,  eventually took the game at a canter.
