 Match Report by Max Murrain

 Washingtonians!

As the curtains drew to a close on a really positive season for the club, we were entertained with a competitive 35-over game of cricket on a lovely late-summer’s afternoon.

After the migration to deep South London (Thanks Marshy!), Norwood CC were a few players short as some were running late and skipper Shawn Hill graciously elected to field first.

Mitchell and Kloss opened the attack and were soon making the ball talk. Kloss (0-19), as he so consistently does, swinging the ball around corners – a quick congratulations to Peter Kloss as his efforts with the ball this season has seen him rise to number 2 in the Washington CC all-time wicket takers list on 226, now only 19 behind Richard Minion – and was very unlucky not to be given a clear LBW. Mitchell was also very unlucky, this year’s leading wicket-taker bowling with good pace and beating the outside edge numerous times.

On came Murrain and Dugmore and straight away came a breakthrough, an in-swinging yorker from Murrain getting the breakthrough the Wash needed with the second ball of his spell. Murrain – enjoying a positive comeback season for the wash – and Dugmore (0-16) tightened the screw as they attempted to put some pressure on the batsmen.

The joy of the breakthrough was short-lived as we welcomed to the crease the dangerous Saeed, his 84 runs part of a risky-but-effective 182 run partnership with opening batsmen Bilal, 127. Bhaskar (0-18), Akram (0-27), Stoughton (0-58) all feeling the effects of their swash-buckling style. It took the ever-dangerous skipper Hill (1-52) to end the carnage. Coming towards the end of the innings, with already an impressive 35 over score in the bag, Norwood were content with swinging away to get as much out of their innings as possible and Mitchell (1-35) came on to take a wicket in the penultimate over and Murrain (4-36) took 3 in the final as a result. A big mention needs to go out to the Washington fielders as many difficult catches were taken on the boundary throughout the innings, a tip-of-the-cap to Tony Harris for taking two at long-off in 1 over.

So, off The Wash set to chase down the mammoth target of 274 from 35 overs.

Things didn’t get off to the greatest start as Turner (0) was out LBW in the first over. Dimitri and Harris set about chipping away at the target with Dimitri in particular playing some lovely shots off the back foot. He unfortunately fell finding the man a backward point for 13. Bhaskar (0) and Akram (4) came and went as opening bowler Imran (3-31) ripped through the top order.

Harris was next to go with for 23, unfortunate to top-edge a bouncer and bringing an end to a solid effort from our number 3. As Harris mentioned throughout the rest of the innings “you guys should be thanking me for top edging it”, his exit brought the big man to the crease. Shawn Hill, in imperious form this year with the bat got straight to business with the equally-as-impressive Dugmore at the other end. To keep it simple, it was a pleasure to watch. At 58-5 you couldn’t blame anyone for thinking that this was going to be another one of those infamous Washington days, not long after at 118-5 you also couldn’t have been blamed for thinking the impossible was still on.

Seemingly a ‘spoke too soon’ moment as Dugmore (33) was out caught ending all hopes of an unlikely win. Hill eventually fell for 57 after being bowled. This left the industrious Kloss (20 Not Out) and Murrain (12 Not Out) trying in vain.

The captain said after the game “195-7 in a 35 over game is a competitive score. We were just unlucky we came up against a strong Norwood team and 2 impressive batting performances. This, however, should not diminish the praise that should be laid upon the club, this score highlights the big improvements we have made in our batting and can take a lot from this year.”

Man of the Match: A toss-up between Skipper Hill and Max Murrain for two good all-round efforts. The nod going to Hill for another great batting performance, breaking the big partnership and a great catch in the deep!
