Sunday 3rd August 2014 vs Hollybush C.C.

Washington shows signs of progress

Hollybush C.C. 219/5
Washington C.C. 172/9

We had a proper battle with our old friends The Hollybush today at the Walker Ground at Southgate, a pitch that is County standard - in other words, a road. It’s a long story how we ended up playing here which I won’t go into.

Losing the toss saw the opposition bat first, and after an early wicket the Bush started batting well, seemingly scoring with ease. However Dugmore capped an excellent early spell with a brilliant top of stumps bowled. However a threat appeared in the form of Iain Duncan, who proceeded to dispatch the ball to any place on the ground where a fielder was not standing. There was an excellent period of Washington consolidation with Crook bowling 8-1-25-0 and Walsh 8-1-40-0 keeping things tied down. Kripps bowled an excellent second spell then Mitchell & Dugmore came back to finish with Dugmore bowling beautifully to achieve 8-1-39-2. However the penultimate over by Mitchell cost 18 runs and the Bush finished with 219 which seemed challenging. Iain Duncan finished with 119, a brilliant knock played with both aggression and deftness. It should be mentioned that the outfield was fast and a lot of balls stayed low, so thanks to the fielders and Bhaskar in particular for your strong efforts today.

Following a decent lunch we set about the task of chasing this score, and after a good start we lost openers Bhaskar & Walsh. White and Demitri put on a 50 run partnership, running many tight singles punctuated with the odd boundary. But with the Bush bowling particularly tight the field started to close in. We lost Demitri just after drinks, and then White for 32 at 120. Things became more difficult, and it became harder to score runs with Cresswell, Jamiel and Alford taking the pace off the ball. Roy did well for his first innings at the Washington for 17. Late on it became clear that we couldn't make it, and several guys dug in to bat out the overs – Lang, Read, Kripps and Crook deserve special mention. In the end we couldn't get the score, but 172/9 against a highly accurate bowling attack is a decent effort.

After the game, stand-in skipper Mitchell commented: “I'm proud of how the lads played today. We fought hard in the field to keep the score down, and when we batted we showed good skills and proper determination. We lost to the better team, but today was a step in the right direction. The Washington is a work in progress. Well done to the Hollybush and Iain Duncan in particular”.
