Sunday 17th June 2012 vs Woodlands Kingsbury C.C.

Easy Win for Dominant Wash

Woodlands Kingsbury C.C. 97 for 9 (35 overs)
Washington C.C. 99 for 2 (26.3 overs)

The club had an easy win on Sunday, successfully restricting Kingsbury to under 100 and then knocking off the runs with 8 ½ overs to spare. All this despite only having 9 players.

Skipper Toby Mariner won the toss and inserted Woodlands Kingsbury in warm conditions with the sun making an occasional appearance. The pitch was on the newly re-laid square at North Middlesex, which looked good and played well, although the ball did keep quite low.

Mariner (0-15) and Luke Mitchell (5-13) commenced the bowling with great accuracy. Mariner plugged away just outside off stump but had no luck all day, the ball passing the bat countless times. Mitchell in contrast was able to home in on the stumps, with good pace, and bowled 3 of the first 4 batsmen in his first spell. Woodlands were 18 for 3 after 8 overs.

The bowling switched to debutant Kosh Mevada (0-11) who had contacted the Wash through the Gumtree website. He bowled a really tight spell of right arm medium pace, but the batsmen stood firm with good defensive technique. At the other end Tom Allott (0-21) bowled a few overs of spin as Woodlands advanced slowly to 57 for 3 after 25 overs.

Kosh then handed the baton to Peter Kloss (3-13) who, as seems ubiquitous this season, got his away swing going immediately, and was also particularly accurate on this day – all his 3 wickets were bowled. Max Murray (1-10) bowled 3 good overs of spin and picked up a scalp, and then Mitchell returned for a second spell and completed his first ever 5fer for Washington, Kloss assisting with a looped catch at deep gully. Sam Clark (0-1) bowled an over at the end of the innings.

The final innings score was 97 for 9 from 35 overs, the Washington bowlers deserving credit for bowling tightly, and the fielders also for good ground fielding on a relatively small ground area.

Following a good tea in the North Midds pavilion, the Wash opened up with Shawn Hill (48) and Brian White (23). They too found the batting conditions not always straightforward and had to be careful to anticipate and play the low ball on the front foot. The pair took the score to 69 in the 20th over before Hill was bowled. By this time of course the job of winning was almost done. Max Murray (9*) came in, White was dismissed caught shortly afterwards, and Sam Clark (14*) played a little cameo and struck the winning runs with a big 6.

Speaking after the game skipper Toby said “well done to the 9 lads for a comprehensive win today. Our bowling was some of the best I’ve seen all season and particular congratulations to Mitch for his first Wash 5fer – very well deserved for the probing way he bowled today. Hilly and Brian did their usual thing to get us home which is great, and I’m glad the fact we were 2 players short today didn’t make a difference.”

The Wash players relaxed and chatted after the game on the North Midds terrace, and tucked into Luke’s enormous jugs (of Fosters) which he had rightly procured on this joyous occasion.

(PS. Not only did the pitch play reasonably well, the tea was officially rated by all as ‘good’, but the showers were also hot!).

Man of the match: Luke Mitchell

Packing the kit: Brian White, for considering a pile of pads sitting on top of the club kit bag to be a job well done...
