Saturday 4th September 2010 vs Gardeners C.C.

Wash Win the Day in the Field!

Washington C.C. 148 all out (39 overs)
Gardeners C.C. 143 for 8 (40 overs)

A remarkable match in which a highly disciplined bowling and fielding performance saw the Wash home to an unlikely victory by just 5 runs.

Despite good scores by Ash Cruickshank (39, his highest ever) and Rory Guy (35), Washington posted a below par score of only 148 all out. The usual 2010 story of a major collapse from 105 for 2 to 148 all out prevailed – let’s face it, it’s far from the first time this season! Cruickshank’s innings was particularly notable as 75% of his runs came from the outside edges of the bat and he was rather fortunate to escape being caught on around half a dozen occasions. Still, the team needed his runs for sure.
All the bowlers bowled well, but particularly Sam Clark who went for a miserly 12 runs in his 8 overs, and Peter Kloss, who found tremendous outswing which the batsmen found unplayable most of the time. Kloss picked up 3 wickets in his spell.
However at the death it was James Philips, skipper Toby Mariner and Ian Relf (bowling the final over) who provided the choke on the run rate sufficiently to achieve the victory. Some great fielding in the infield also provided fantastic support to the bowlers.
Skipper Toby Mariner said after the game: it’s impossible to pick out one performance that achieved this victory. It was truly a team effort and every single player contributed in some significant was to achieving the result. Well done to all!
