Sunday 8th August 2010 vs Hollybush C.C.

Washington let it slip

Hollybush C.C.
Washington C.C.

Washington collapsed to a shock defeat on Sunday against Hollybush.  A strong bowling performance had left the Wash with a distinctly get-able target of 177 off 40 overs:  having got within 50 of that with 13 overs left and only 3 wickets down, a regulation victory looked to be on the cards.  However, as has happened so often this season, the loss of one wicket led to several, and the resultant slide buried Washington's hopes.

It was an unhappy ending to a day which, for the most part, belonged to the Wash.  Skipper Shawn Hill inserted the Bush after winning the toss, and was rewarded with an excellent all-round bowling performance from his side. Clint Dugmore (0-10) bowled with real zip and was unlucky not to pick up wicket;  at the other end Pete Kloss (2-33) was unplayable, looping the ball round in the humid conditions.  He could have had a hatful.

There was no respite for the Bush when the first change pair were replaced.  First Hill (0-39), then Luke Mitchell (0-26), Ian Relf (0-35) and Stuart Marsh (2-27) came into the attach and kept the pressure right on the visitors.

The Bush’s eventual total of 176 might have been considerably lower had it not been for a series of spilled catches.  Yet Washington’s general performance in the field was decent - Marsh took two outstanding catches and Hill, Relf and the lively Ash Cruickshank capped fine displays of ground fielding with smart run outs.

Facing an achievable target, Wash started off brightly.  The first wicket pair put on 53 in ten overs, before Matt Cheviot (3) was bowled.  The heavy scoring Mike Turner moved quickly to 41 and looked certain of fifty before being trapped lbw.  There were still no alarm bells at this stage for Wash.  Dugmore (14) played some sweet shots, and when he departed David Gluckman (4) bedded in for what seemed likely to be a decisive partnership with Hill (30).

The loss of the skipper, however, marked the beginning of the end for the Wash.  A succession of batsmen got in but weren’t able to capitalise – Cruikshank (11) and then Relf (13) both inched Wash closer to the target, but the tail fell away leaving Kloss (2 n. o.) stranded, Wash 23 runs short, and the Bushmen with a surprise victory.
