On a boiling hot day when England got unceremoniously knocked out of the World Cup by Germany, Washington conceded a lot of runs in the field, then got themselves into a potential winning position with the bat, but then ultimately ran out of steam. The outfield in Oakwood was extremely dry and the boundaries on one side rather short so boundaries were fairly easy to come by and this explains the high scores. Skipper Aff Naseem played an extremely solid innings of 63 and was a lot of the reason why the Wash got close to Fives' score. There were also good contributions from Ash Cruickshank (34, significantly his highest ever Wash score), Lee Fogarty (31) and Naveed Mir (23, including 3 big 6s). However the lower order just couldn't deliver once Aff was out. The last 5 wickets fell for only 5 runs in less than 4 overs, not the first time this season such a major collapse has been seen (Tilford....). Earlier the pick of the bowlers was probably Sam Clark (2-37) who exploited the bounce in the pitch well. A couple of the bowlers suffered significantly, firstly to maintain line and length in the very hot conditions, and then against the aggressive batting of some of the Fives' players.
