Southill Park C.C. 155 for 2 (31.2 overs)

Peter Kloss reporting

Despite hail showers on the way to the ground, the Washington’s game at Southill Park in Bedfordshire got underway on time on Monday lunchtime. Southill had won the toss and asked the Wash to bat on this bitterly cold early season day. Still, there were some significant sunny periods during the afternoon, allowing for the ubiquitous photo opportunities at this most picturesque of grounds. Only the many sweaters being employed by players will give the true nature of the weather away!

Chris Davis (12) and Aff Naseem (0) opened up but unfortunately Naseem departed in the first over thanks to an excellent catch behind the stumps. Lee Fogarty (21) joined Davis and they were able to push the score onto 29 after 6 overs against accurate medium pace bowling. However 3 wickets then fell relatively quickly as Baxter (junior) particularly (3-14) got just reward for his persistence with the ball. Stephen Coyle (2) was a victim in addition to Davis and Fogarty.
Peter Kloss (7) and Shawn Hill then steadied the side somewhat with a 12 over partnership to take the Washington total up to 73 in the 24th. Kloss was then caught behind which, with 5 wickets down, was Hill’s signal to start to accelerate. He did this with power, hitting 13 4’s and two 6’s in his total of 95. The strongest support at the other end came from Luke Mitchell (4) who faced more than 30 balls in his innings. Elliott Bromley, Sam Clark and Russell Pendry all scored brief ducks. Hill was 8th man out on 95, caught at cover from a mishit attempt at a boundary which might have taken him to his century. The sense of disappointment in the Wash players, and Hill himself, was strong.
Number 11, Toby Mariner was left on 2 not out and the Washington total only 154, the consistent accuracy of all the Southill bowling being a big factor.
After a good tea, Sam Clark (0-38) opened the bowling for the Wash along with Luke Mitchell (0-16) at the other end. As the statistics suggest there was no early breakthrough and Southill openers, Humphries and Baxter A. (senior) were able to build a good partnership of 75 in the first 15 overs. Clark was unlucky not to get a wicket with a number of uncontrolled shots going through the air on the off side. Skipper Hill tried Mariner (0-20) to no avail and the first wicket eventually came from Hill himself who bowled some impressive in-swingers at pace. In fact Hill (2-34) took both the wickets to fall (bowled) with very similar deliveries.
The other bowler used was Pendry (0-43) who bowled a solid and accurate 9 over spell in support of Hill, tying the batsmen down for significant periods. As it was through Southill needed to score at only 3 runs an over and so there was little pressure on them throughout their innings. They achieved their target with almost 14 overs to spare and the game was concluded by 6pm.
Skipper Hill said after the game “they were a good side and we were no match for them unfortunately. The cold didn’t help our performance either I think. Time to sink a couple of beers, forget today, and contemplate the next game – we will do better!”
Man of the Match: Shawn Hill (by a mile)
