Ash Cruickshank reporting

It was a glorious sunny day as the Wash came together for the season opener at Tilford, Surrey in front of quite a large crowd enjoying a lovely spring day.  The pitch was slow but hard and reflected the work and money Tilford had invested in the off-season.  Tilford batted first and found the going hard in the first 20 overs due to some tight (and at times unlucky) bowling by openers Mitchell and Hill (6 overs, 3 mdns, 3 runs, 0 wickets).  Cumming replaced Mitchell and soon had the first breakthrough prior to drinks with to a spectacular catch by Tony Kiwi at point dismissing Town-Jones for 31 and seeing Tilford at 1-72 after 21 overs.  Mariner (4, 1, 28, 0) replaced Hill at the other end and bowled well initially before Wilson & Hounsham increased the scoring rate as they both moved towards their 50's.

Cumming eventually broke through again bowling Wilson for 53 and following up quickly bowling Ali for 10 and MacDonald for 10 finishing with (10, 0, 54, 4).  Cruickshank took some punishment at the other end with (5, 0, 45, 0) before being replaced by Mitchell for his second spell who continued his good bowling finishing with (13, 5, 46, 0).  Pendry replaced Cumming late in the innings with Hounsham & Martyn throwing the bat and had Martyn caught at long on by Cumming to finish with (3, 0, 35, 1).  Tilford declared their innings shortly afterwards with Hounsham not out with a fine 79 and Matthews not out on 10.

The Wash innings was opened by Tony Harris and Chris davis in what is likely to be his second last game for the Wash before he and Lynsey move to Bournemouth and the two (Tony and Chris that is) quickly settled in and set about accummulating the necessary runs in the slow conditions.  There were some close chances with Harris providing a C&B chance that the bowler not only dropped but copped in the mouth requiring treatment before being bowled by a fine delivery by Martyn that started on his legs, straightened and deflected off his pads onto the stumps to be dismissed for 31.

New Club Vice-Captain Aff Naseem joined Davis but was LBW second ball for 0.  Cumming joined Davis who was fortunate to be dropped at cow corner and the two resumed accummulating runs and at drinks with 20 overs to go, the Wash needed 115.  The guys looked to increase the pace and Cumming was eventually caught for 17.  Nassar joined Davis but was quickly run out for two followed by Rider who was bowled for 2.  Skipper Hill came out as a last chance to chase victory with the Wash needing 76 from 12 overs but was caught for 1 with the Wash now 6-148.  The decision was made to shut up shop and look to save a draw, however Davis looked on in despair as Cruickshank (0), Mariner (4), Mitchell (0) and Pendry (0) were dismissed in less than two overs to leave Davis stranded not out on 90 and the Wash all out for 153.

Man of the Match - Chris Davis for carrying his bat

Packing the kit - Naseem, Cruickshank, Mitchell & Pendry for their ducks
