Yet Another Nail-biter

Washington C.C. 227 for 6 declared
Hetairoi C.C. 223 for 8

Ash Cruickshank reporting.

The Colonel was promoted to Captain at Oxford as the Wash returned to the site of last years triumphant win and gay and lesbian festival.

After being sent in to bat, Chris Davis opened keen to repeat his century last season. However, he did not look settled due to the preparation and was dismissed for a second ball duck. However Glenn Matthews settled in nicely and was steadily building a total supported by recent centurian Steve Brown until the Brown dog was bowled around his legs by a left armer bowling inswingers over the wicket (I know this doesn't make sense but trust me...that's what happened).

Joel Braniff joined Glenn at 2-23 and the pair continued to accumulate runs looking quite comfortable until Glenn was fired LBW for 38 (No...I was scoring). The Colonel/Captain joined Joel and set about the bowling in his usual fashion before driving one straight for a C&B chance that the bowler dropped. However, the ball deflected onto the stumps and Braniff was dismissed in unfortunate circumstances for the second week running. This was also the second Wash player the Colonel had taken out with this shot having cleaned up Ian Relf during warm-ups!

The Colonel was joined by Holt and the two quickly increased the scoring rate as they started to think about a total for declaring. The Colonel was eventually caught at deep square leg for 44 and after Cruickshank was runout without facing a ball, Lee Fogerty and Holt continued the onslaught before the Captain declared for 227 with Holt n.o. 42 and Fogs n.o. 18.

The Wash bowlers started in very tidy fashion with good support from the field. Rory Guy (5o 0-13) and Ian Relf (5o 1-19) had Hetaroi (from the ancient greek meaning 'Companions') under immediate pressure and wickets continued to fall with wickets to Coyle (3o 1-16) and The Colonel (10o 1-38). However, opener Denning (82) played fine innings and kept the Companions in it before finally being dismissed by Holt (9o 2-52).

While that should have been the end of the run chase a couple of loose overs by Cruickshank (2o 0-31) gave the oppo a sniff although another wicket to Holt and one to Davis (6o 1-46) as well as two great run-outs with aggressive fielding by Relf and Braniff combining with Davis saw Heratoi needing 8 from the last 2 balls with 2 wickets in hand. They could only manage 4 runs and the game finished as an entertaining draw.

Man of the match - Matt Holt (with one dissenting vote)

Packing the Kit - Sandeep 'The Colonel' Kuckreja who arriving late to the game with the kit and match ball due to a stop at KFC
