Sunday 21st June 2009 vs Northfields C.C.

Wash Receive a Drubbing

Northfields C.C. 286 for 8 (40 overs)
Washington C.C. 125 all out (27.3 overs)

Peter Kloss reporting.

Northfields recorded a most comprehensive victory over the Wash on Sunday.

On a dry and particularly slow pitch Northfields won the toss and elected to bat. The day was bright and sunny. Sam Clark (1-46) and Luke Mitchell (1-32) opened up the Washington attack but couldn't achieve a breakthrough. In fact the Northfields scoring rate was rather healthy at around 5 an over, aided by particularly short boundaries at North Middlesex and some howlers from certain Washington fielders.

Peter Kloss (2-75) and Shawn Hill (3-43) took over and Hill was able to make the first breakthrough and grab 2 more wickets, including a great catch at deep mid-on by Gary Malcolm. Malcolm (1-83) came on and bowled well enough but the Northfields batsmen were well set and able to push the scoring on with frequent boundaries. The opening bowlers returned and grabbed a wicket each, and then in the final overs Kloss went for a number of big 6s but had the reward of a couple of wickets, one a great running catch diving forward by Hill.

A good tea was had with cold meats, salad and fresh sandwiches.

The Wash's innings started well enough with Paul Knight (18) and Chad Bhaskar (16) striking several boundaries in the first half a dozen overs. A couple of wickets then fell but the innings looked reasonably healthy at 58 for 2 after 10 overs. Shawn Hill (31) came in and struck a number of sweet shots, but then the innings just disintegrated and fell away, the last 7 wickets falling for just 32 runs. The Northfields bowling was tidy, but nothing very special. The Wash batsmen couldn't get going and seemed unable to cope with the very slow wicket. Also a willingness to give LBWs didn't help - there were 4 such decisions in the innings.

Wash didn't use 12 of their overs and were all out for only 125. This was definitely a drubbing and the Northfields team were in good spirits afterwards.

North Middlesex seems to be jinxed for the Wash this season - 3 matches and 3 losses, two by big margins.

Man of the match: Shawn Hill, for good returns with bath bat and ball

Packing the kit: shared between Peter Kloss and Chad Bhaskar, for particularly poor fileding performances - both need to try harder next time
