Saturday 13th June 2009 vs Yarl C.C.

Successful Chase

Yarl C.C. 181 all out (32.1 overs)
Washington C.C. 186 for 6 (35 overs)

Peter Kloss reporting.

Washington chased down a total of 182 on Saturday in West Harrow thanks to several batting contributions, and particularly a quick-fire 50 from Sandeep Kuckreja.

Skipper Tony Harris won the toss and chose to field on a green wicket which was expected to do something for the bowlers. The day was warm and sunny and with the outfield cut short, and not particularly long boundaries , a high scoring game was expected.

Rory Guy (1-31) and Peter Kloss (1-36) were the opening bowlers. Guy bowled a batsman in the first over with a beauty but then completely lost his line, bowling 15 wides in his 4 overs. The pitch was on a significant slope from one end to the other and this may have affected Guy, although perhaps activities the night before might have had something to do with it...

The Sri Lankan Yarl batsmen, Jude and then Sachin, set about the bowling with some vigour, possibly influenced by the World 20-20 competition being held in England at this time. Kloss, and then Mariner (2-32) were victims of some big hitting with Yarl reaching 117 for 2 in only the 16th over. There was some lively and variable bounce, but anything pitched too full was dispatched to the boundary.

But then 4 wickets fell for 1 run, Sandeep Kuckreja (2-29) bowling both the Yarl danger men. The rest of the innings more or less fell away and it was only a matter of time before Yarl were all out for 181 from 32.1 overs. Russell Pendry (2-37) and Ahir Pushnapath (2-14) took the final wickets. It was particularly pleasing to see a strong performance on debut from Ahir, whose medium pace bowling promised much for the future.

When Wash batted a lively start was made to reach 56 for 2 after 10 overs. Chris Davis (16), Simon Rider (8) and Tony Harris (7) all contributing, as well as extras (mainly wides).

Phil Hamlet (18) and Glenn Matthews (16) then came together and both played well to steady the innings with a partnership over 13 overs. This certainly consolidated the Wash’s  position, but with a scoring rate of little more than 2 an over did leave rather a lot for the latter part of the innings. When Sandeep Kuckreja (65*) came to the wicket in the 25th over, 96 were still needed at 6.5 an over.

However the Wash players need not have worried as Sandeep set about the bowling, although there was one heart-stopping moment when he turned a ball off his legs and was dropped at leg gully. 10 overs later the Wash had won. Ahir Pushpanath (8) and Rory Guy (3*) both provided good support to Sandeep who hit five 6s and five 4s.

Man of the match: Sandeep Kuckreja for a strong contribution with both ball and bat

Packing the kit: Simon Rider, who had to race off straight after the game to pick up his girlfriend in....Surrey!
