Saturday 2nd May 2009 vs Great Gaddesden C.C.

Holt to the Rescue

Washington C.C. 163 all out (40 overs)
Great Gaddesden C.C. 165 for 4 (35.3 overs)

Washington lost at Great Gaddesden on Saturday, the opposition scoring the winning runs comfortably with around 5 overs to spare. However earlier in the day it had looked a lot worse with the Wash teetering on 22 for 5. Middle order contributions from debutant Richard Fagan (11), Lee Fogarty (20), Matthew Holt (75) and Peter Kloss (25) ensured that a decent total was posted in the end, and a full game was played out. Holt and Kloss shared a partnership of 75 in only 12 overs.

When Washington bowled Gaddesden were restricted in their scoring by some tight bowling, reaching only 69 for 3 after 20 overs. However an innings of 68 not out from batsman Crawley saw them through, as only one further wicket was lost. The best figures were turned in by Steve Coyle (2-32) and there were also wickets for Sandeep and Gary Malcolm, Gary’s coming from a great running catch on the boundary by skipper Tony Harris.

Debutant Glenn Matthews announced his arrival for the Wash vocally behind the stumps – his cries of “make them play through the offside” and “keep your concentration” accompanying virtually every ball. John Roche would have been proud (you have to have been in the club for a few years to appreciate this one).

After the game Kiwi Harris said “a shame to have lost but good to be back in good surroundings at Great Gaddesden. We simply didn’t get enough runs and we owe a lot to Holty for getting to the score we did. I’m glad to see a couple of new guys today and hopefully we will see more of them”.

Man of the match: Matt Holt for his 75 runs

Packing the kit: Sandeep for being half an hour late at the Wash and making 3 of his team mates late as a consequence
