Sunday 20th April 2008 vs Highgate C.C.

Early Season Loss

Highgate C.C. 200 for 9 (40 overs)
Washington C.C. 182 for 8 (40 overs

Washington started the new season with a disappointing loss to Highgate, on this cold but generally bright mid-April day.

Playing on an artificial strip due to the early season pitch conditions skipper Shawn Hill lost the toss and was asked to bowl. Max Murrain (1-25) and Peter Kloss (2-26) opened up well and Highgate made a cautious start in the first 10 overs, losing both opening batsmen in the process.

Tony Burt (1-35) and Shawn Hill (2-28) took over and both bowled decent spells, picking up occaisional wickets. However Highgate batsman, Jenkins, was the thorn in Washington's side. He struck frequent boundaries and accumulated runs from all bowlers, but none of the other batsmen were able to stay with him and build a partnership. Jenkins was eventually caught for 122; the next highest batsman's total was only 7.

Russell Pendry (1-21) and Tobe Mariner (1-34) also contributed with the ball, both picking up a wicket.

When the Wash batted, Tony Harris (25) and Aff Naseem (37) but on an excellent opening partnership of 65 in 17 overs. However the middle order were not able to capitalise on this excellent start. Tony Burt (17) and Shawn Hill (21) being the only ones to contribute with several lusty blows. Max Murrain (0), Robert Tidey (8), Jack Roberts (1) and Grattan McCoach (0) all came and went fairly rapidly.

By this stage the innings had largely stagnated with the score only moving on to 121 for 8 in the 34th over. The run rate required was now over 11 an over and proved too much for Peter Kloss (37*) and Tobe Mariner (17*) who tried galliantly to reach the target in an explosive partnership of 61 runs. Kloss in particular hit three straight 6s.

The Wash ended up 18 runs short in the end. Skipper Hill said after the game "Disappointing to start with a loss, particularly having got ourselves into what I thought was a winning position mid-way through our innings. However there were some encouraging performances from some of the bowlers, from the opening batsmen and from the late order. It's great that the season is underway and I'm looking forward to the next game."
