Saturday 26th May 2007 vs Northfields C.C.

Rain Spoils Wash's Day

Washington C.C. 157 for 7 (35 overs)
Northfields C.C. Did not bat

There was a frustrating day for Washington cricket club on Saturday as their game was abandoned at tea due to persistent rain. Having been in trouble at 32 for 4 some sensible batting from the middle order had elevated Washington's score to something which was certainly competitive and possibly match winning.

In the early afternoon Washington were in disarray. The late arrival of several players forced skipper Peter Kloss to offer to bat on a green, slow seaming wicket. The absence of players also forced a hasty reshuffle in the batting order. Openers Paul Irons (18) and Lee Fogarty (9) took the score to 23 but then 4 wickets fell quickly, Taran Persaud (0) and Aff Naseem (1) also departing against some penetrative Northfields bowling. The Wash were reeling at 32 for 4 in the 11th over.

David Gluckman (29*) then joined debutant Jeremy Orlando (5) and endeavoured to consolidate the innings. Certainly the rot was stopped, but inevitably at the expense of run rate. John Roche (13) then joined Gluckman and hit some lusty blows to the boundary to push the rate up a little. However the acceleration in the innings only really commenced when Peter Kloss (41) strode to the middle with 12 overs remaining. Gluckman and Kloss put on 60 for the 7th wicket, Kloss playing himself in but then hitting out, scoring half a dozen 4s and one big straight 6. Tobe Mariner, also making his debut for the club, came in at the end and hit a couple of sweet shots.

Washington had posted a competitive score thanks to Gluckman standing firm, Kloss's hitting and 26 wides from Northfields. With a strong bowling line up they fancied their chances of skittling Northfields out, but sadly the drizzle started as the teams tucked into their sandwiches and by the end of tea the rain was steady. There was briefly a chance of further play as the rain eased for 10 minutes, but it wasn't to be and the game was called off at about 5.30pm.

Skipper Kloss said “an unfortunate premature end to the game. I'm sorry for the bowlers who didn't get to play at all today. Hopefully the summer weather will improve from here and we can get lots of cricket in going forward”

Both teams looked forward to the rematch scheduled for a month's time at North Middlesex.
