Saturday 5th May 2007 vs Great Gaddesden C.C.

Washington frustrated by Warren

Washington C.C. 231 for 9 (40 overs)
Great Gaddesden C.C. 235 for 7 (39 overs)

Great Gaddesden scored an unusually comfortable 3 wicket win with an over to spare in this traditionally popular and close fixture thanks to a dominating innings by a single Gaddesden batsman.

Washington captain Peter Kloss lost the toss and was put into bat on an overcast day. The lack of rain meant that the pitch was hard and dry, even though the early season grass had not been cut too low.

Washington started well with George Hope (19) and Tony Harris (32) taking the team to 50 in only the 5th over with some lusty blows to the boundary. However a few wickets then fell and Washington did not reach three figures until the 14th over, for the loss of 5 wickets. A slow but sure 6th wicket partnership of 61 over 15 overs between Brad Hitchcock (35) and Taran Persaud (24) steadied the innings before the onslaught in the final overs from Sandeep Kuckreja (20) and Peter Kloss (24) took the score well beyond 200. The total seemed about par for the course, the batsmen having shown a lot of character to push the score so high after the early loss of wickets.

After tea Peter Kloss (3-41) and Max Murrain (2-38) both bowled well to restrict Gaddesden to 33 for 3 after 7 overs. Murrain in particular was swinging the ball prodigiously into the right hander. However by this time Gaddesden batsman Warren had begun to build a solid innings. The next bowlers Matthew Holt (0-43), Taran Persaud (0-35), Sandeep Kuckreja (1-36) and Paul Knight (0-20) all found it difficult to make inroads as Warren was solid, holding the innings together and scoring at a good rate. A fabulous run out by George Hope gave the Wash hope, and they were unlucky to have a number of LBW appeals turned down. In the wickets which were taken Tony Harris took 3 outfield catches in the covers.

Murrain and Kloss both came back and took a further wicket each but Warren stood firm, the winning runs being scored with one over remaining and Warren unbeaten on 134 out of a total of 235 for 7.

Skipper Peter Kloss said after the game “A good game of cricket. The guys tried really hard today and it feels unfortunate that we've been beaten almost by one man. We tried our best and hopefully we can come back later in the season and turn the tables on Gaddesden. Thanks to everyone for turning out.”
