Washington catch the Fishers

Peter Kloss reporting

Washington CC, taking their name from the Washington pub in Belsize Park, scored their first victory of the season on Sunday. Playing St John Fisher CC at Harpenden they posted a solid total before tying the Fishers down and catching impressively in the outfield to win easily.

Wash skipper Gurney lost the toss and St John Fisher chose to bowl. The early season pitch was green and tricky with slow and variable bounce. Opening the innings Rob Tidey (46) started quietly but managed to keep his wicket intact as others fell – Harris for 0 and Nasseem 8. However Irons (27) and Tidey then put on a 50 partnership and there were also significant contributions from Persaud (12) and at the end of the innings from Hill (26). Extras were 30, mostly wides.

In their innings St John Fisher never really got going against some good line and length bowling from the Washington. The run rate was never more than 3.5 an over and slowed considerably as the innings progressed. Wickets fell steadily and crucially Washington fielded excellently, stifling run opportunities and catching everything which came their way. There were 5 outfield catches and a stumping. The wickets were shared out amongst the bowlers, but Nick Tidey (3-8 from 8 overs with 3 maidens) was the pick, bowling a great line just outside off stump and exploiting the pitch conditions well. There were significant contributions also from Gurney (2-4), Kloss (2-16), Hill (1-3) and Terry Tidey (1-23).

Having lost narrowly on the last ball in their game the previous day, Washington were glad to notch up their first win. Gurney said after the game “there were some really positive signs today – batsmen scoring some runs on a difficult pitch, some decent bowling and the fielding performance was excellent for early season”

The Washington players headed back to London in positive mood, glad that the season is underway, looking forward to further encounters through the season, and intent on maintaining their good form.

Man of Match: Nick Tidey, for an excellent spell of accurate fast bowling

Packing the Kit: Shaun Hill, for turning up extremely late and bowling more maiden overs off the field than on

Washington: Tidey R, Harris, Nasseem, Irons, Datnow (+), Persaud, Tidey N, Gurney (c), Kloss, Hill, Tidey T
