Saturday 14th May 2005 vs Rose and Crown C.C.

Hope Century Takes the Crown

Washington C.C. 217-7 (40 overs)
Rose and Crown C.C. 114 (27 overs)

Washington CC scored an emphatic victory on Saturday against Rose and Crown CC in Fairlop, thanks to a masterful century from Aussie giant, George Hope.

New club vice-captain, Peter Kloss won the toss and chose to bat on a well prepared, flat wicket. Competing with the 5-a-side football tournament on adjacent pitches, Tony Harris and new-boy Cameron Lynch opened the innings, but Lynch quickly fell for 8. Hope then strode to the crease and dominated proceedings in typical style for an innings of 107 including 5 huge sixes and 11 fours. In one particular over Hope hit sixes off the first 3 balls, and 26 in total. Hope even attracted attention from some of the football spectators who found cricket more enthralling than football for a brief while.

Four batsmen supported Hope in his innings, new-boys Justin Simonis (0), Dave Mazza (8) and David McClatchey (28), and David Gluckman (5). After Hope was out, inevitably caught on the boundary, McClatchey and Brad Hitchcock (27 no) put on a partnership of 43 for the 7th wicket in quick time and Richard Jones came in at the end to hit 12 in little more than 2 overs.

Rose and Crown, suffering from a weakened batting line-up due to the departure of two players, got off to a bad start, losing 2 quick wickets with only 4 on the board. Runs remained hard to come by against opening bowlers Kloss (1-4) and Jones (2-19). Simonis took a good catch at mid-off. However Rose and Crown’s no. 3, Alan (51) grafted away in the middle of the innings against Stoughton (1-33), Mazza (1-19) and Lynch (1-19) to develop a respectable score for his side. Despite Washington putting on the pressure in the field, at one stage it did seem as though Rose and Crown might occupy the crease for the full 40 overs. However in the end two run outs and quick wickets at the end for Mazza and Lynch sealed a strong win for the Wash.

Skipper Kloss, commenting after the game, said “it would have been a lot closer without Hope’s contribution – he’s a huge asset to any side”

Man of Match: George Hope, for his century

Packing the Kit: George Hope, for playing in dilapidated trainers only held together by the skipper’s tape!

Washington: Harris, Lynch, Hope, Simonis, Mazza, Gluckman, McClatchey, Hitchcock (+), Jones, Kloss (c) , Stoughton
