Wash Denied at the Death

Washington C.C. 239
Tilford C.C. 105-8

Peter Kloss reporting

Washington failed to complete a deserved victory in the gathering gloom on Sunday evening at Tilford in Surrey. Tilford’s no. 7 and 10 batsmen held off the challenge for the final overs from Washington spinner and skipper Gurney, and others to frustrate the visitors.

Earlier Gurney had won the toss under a leadened sky and elected to bat. Washington accumulated runs throughout their innings and there were solid contributions from Demetri (41), Irons (61) and Hill (37). However the innings fell away slightly towards the end in the chase for quick runs before a declaration, and the Wash were 239 all out; from only 34 overs however. Opening bowler Kloss did himself no favours by running Gurney out, before hitting 3 6’s in consecutive balls in the closing overs – needless to say he was a lonely figure in the field later.

After an excellent tea in the club house of this wonderful village green setting, Tilford started their innings cautiously, unsure of whether to go for the target or not, particularly as the light at 5 pm in mid-September was already failing. In the event Tilford lost wickets steadily thorough their innings against some tight bowling from Washington. Medium pacers Nick Tidey (2-17) and Jones (2-24) were the pick in addition to the spin of Gurney (3-17). Gurney turned the ball considerably and was unplayable at times, bowling one accomplished Tilford batsman round his legs. At 68 for 8 with more than 10 overs to go, no hope of getting the runs, and in rather dark conditions, Tilford seemed to be doomed. However Cartwright and Robertson played exceptionally well, each holding up an end and giving very few chances away. Unfortunately Irons dropped the one catch which was given, to the consternation of his team mates. Tilford ended at 105 for 8 from 36 overs.

The teams retired to the pub on the edge of the village green and chewed over a season almost over and the finer points of declaration cricket. Gurney growled “it was a good competitive game, although we should have won it at the end. It would have been interesting if we’d taken that catch late on. “

Man of the match: Gurney, for some ripping spin bowling and great captaincy! Packing the kit: Kloss, for depriving his captain of an innings and then adding insult to injury by scoring runs himself.
