Sunday 7th August 2005 vs Sundowners C.C.

Wash Sunset-ed

Sundowners C.C. 218-8 (40 overs)
Washington C.C. 109

Sundown Specials completed a double over Washington on Sunday with an emphatic 109-run victory at Alexandra Park. After a decent start, Wash fell away, allowing their visitors to build a big total and then scarcely competing with the bat.

The day began well, with Peter Kloss calling correctly and winning his fifth consecutive toss. He invited the Sundowners to bat, and when Richard Jones (2-37) took a brace of early wickets - Vernon (3) and Medlock (0) – the decision seemed a good one. However, Steve Golding (51) and Mick McGowan (62) then settled in and rebuilt the innings.

The pitch was low and slow, and if the ball was put in the right place, the batsmen could do little. Anything short or over-pitched, however, was worth 4, as the outfield was very fast. Both Golding and McGowan drove very cleanly, and their 108-run partnership for the third wicket put Sundowners in the box seat.

Kloss (2-40) eventually trapped McGowan lbw, and then the excellent Gary Crooks (1-20), the pick of the bowlers, bowled Golding. Cotsen (0) soon followed, and, for a short time, the game appeared to be back in the balance with Sundowners on 137-5.

Sadly, it didn’t last. After a shaky start, James Vassay (41) began to lay into the bowling, and in despair the skipper turned to David Gluckman’s looping off-spinners. By the time Vassay succumbed, Sundowners had raced to 190; the 28 runs that came from the last dozen balls were icing on the Specials’ cake.

Chasing 218 was never likely to be easy but Washington’s reply got off to the worst possible start when Pilgrim trapped danger-man Paul Irons (0) lbw with one that kept low.

Thereafter it became something of a procession. Sean Kricker was lbw to another shooter, Ruduss caught in the gully for an enterprising 10, Wayne Stockley bowled for 1, and the stylish Af Naseem (14) bowled by an excellent ball from Vassay that moved back a shade. Gluckman (1) soon followed, and Wash were 37-6 after just 14 overs.

Immediately after the drinks interval, Matthew Cragoe fell for 7, and then followed Washington’s best stand, as Marty Bock (37) and Richard Jones (10 not out) took the attack to the Sundowners. Bock hit some sizzling drives before being bowled by Herlihy (4-26). The end of their 46-run partnership was effectively the end of the game for Wash, as Crooks (0) and Kloss (5) were unable to keep the now rampant Herlihy at bay.

As the sun set over Alexandra Palace, it was the Sundowners who were celebrating.
