Saturday 30th July 2005 vs Arkley C.C.

Another wash out for Wash

Washington C.C. 88-5
Arkley C.C.

Heavy rain forced Washington and Arkley to abandon proceedings on Saturday with their contest delicately poised. Having won the toss and elected to bat, Wash were 88-5 on a damp, turning wicket when the heavens opened.

The original weather forecast was reasonably good and Wash skipper Peter Kloss had no hesitation in batting first when the coin came down the right way up. And the decision was vindicated as openers Pete Demetri and Tony Harris took the attack to the home bowling. Forty-seven runs came from the first 10 overs, but then Demetri skied a catch to square leg and Arkley fought their way back.

Demetri’s dismissal was followed by the first interruption for rain: the players came off and took a very early (but excellent) tea. Altogether, some 40 minutes were lost. On the resumption, however, Washington began to lose wickets rapidly as left-arm spinner Jack Stellane (5-22) skilfully exploited the rain-affected surface.

David Gluckman was bowled for 1, and then Harris (38) flat-batted a stinging catch to cover where Rossington calmly accepted the gift. Leo Demetri (3) and Paul Wiste (6) quickly followed Harris back up the pavilion steps and at 73-5 Washington’s innings was in the balance.

By the time the second cloudburst hit the ground, Wash were beginning to stabilise their position. Matthew Cragoe (6 not out) held up one end while new Kiwi Mike Sleyer combined stout defence with occasional brutal hitting to carry the Wash total to 88. The huge six he pounded back over Stellane’s head was a heartening moment for the beleaguered batting side.

How the game would have developed thereafter is not clear. It seemed 130 might be a decent total and Wash had a variety of bowling options available to exploit the conditions: Kloss and Neil Martin for swing; Demetri and Gary Malcolm for spin. The two new boys, Sleyer and Greg Martin who were also eyeing up the track hungrily. And of course there was that scandalously underused resource, the Cragoe off-spinner, just waiting to wheel into action at the captain’s command.

However on this occasion, it was not to be, and both sides had to reconcile themselves to several early beers in the Prince of Wales – a fate they accepted with a good grace.
