Sunday 1st May 2005 vs Northfields C.C.

THE GURU TIDEY’S UP

Washington C.C. 282-4
Northfields C.C. 241-7

Washington Cricket Club sponsored by Nandos travelled to Northfields in west London for their second game of the 2005 season and on the warmest day of the year so far were asked to bat after losing the toss in this 40 over match.

Justin Gurney the club captain asked Peter ‘The Guru’ Demetri and 14 year old Robert Tidey to open the batting and could not have asked for more from his opening batsmen.

Demetri a seasoned campaigner for the Wash was more than matched by the young Tidey as they dominated the accurate Northfields bowling.

Demetri played the full repertoire of his classic shots dispatching the ball to all parts of the ground whilst Tidey played technically very correct , driving and pulling the ball for regular boundaries.

After 28 overs the Wash were 192 for 0 and going along very nicely, in the 29th over Robert Tidey was given out LBW off the bowling of Egan for 76 masterful runs, his highest score for the Wash and a major contribution to the 195 run first wicket partnership.

Tony’The Kiwi’Harris who had to sit in the pavilion for 29 overs was next to the crease looking to carry on with the excellent batting form he showed last season and to maintain the advantage which was clearly now the Washington’s.

Gurney was looking for a large early season score and the Guru and Kiwi continued to score runs at will until the 32nd over when the Guru was caught off a top edge

to the bowling of Dike for 105 runs an early season century which has put down a marker for batsman of the season already.

Taran Persaud was next to the crease and was off the mark from his very first ball with a nice off drive, however the next ball he faced was probably the ball of the day from Mckay, comprehensively removing Persauds middle stump for 1 run.

This brought the big South African, Shawn Hill to the crease with the captains instructions to cut loose, Hill knows no other way.

Harris and Hill proceeded to exchange flat sixes so the ball was not lost, until Hill was caught for 14 going for another audacious shot

Harris was joined by Brad Hitchcock and they saw out the final three overs scoring another 20 runs between them with Harris finishing 43 not out and Hitchcock 12 not out, with the Wash finishing on 282 for 4 off their 40 overs making skipper Gurney a vary happy man.

TEA

The Northfields innings got under way with the Wash aware that it was a batsmans track. Skipper Gurney urging his bowlers for a tight line and an early wicket.

Peter Kloss and Branden Legg opened the bowling and the early break through was gained by Legg, taking Mclays wicket caught by Harris at point for 0.

Kloss continued to bowl with purpose but little luck and Eric Stoughton was brought in to the attack early to keep the run chase honest , and proceeded to take the wicket of Mckay the dangerous opening bat LBW for 27 during his 8 over spell.

Gurney brought himself in to the attack introducing some leg spin, and proceeded to take the wicket of Cooper with the help of a spectacular catch at mid on by Shawn Hill.

The skipper rotated his bowlers using Tom Allott, Shawn Hill, Robert Tidey and Taran Persaud, looking to take wickets , however all the while Northfields No.3 bat G. Jones was steadily accumulating runs with some lusty blows, in the process hitting his batting partner twice.

The wicket remained a good batting track and Kloss, in his second spell, eventually took the wicket of Jones, nicely caught and bowled for a magnificent 114.

Legg also in his second spell took the wickets of Egan, a fine catch by Allott for 28 and Jones nicely caught behind by Hitchcock for 2.

Kloss bowled Morrey for 0, however the Wash were unable to bowl out Northfields, who finished on 241 for 7 from their 40 overs.

There was some fine fielding, accurate bowling and two great attempts for a catch that helped the Wash gain a 41 run victory continuing their good start to the 2005 season.

Man of the Match – PETER DEMETRI

Packing the kit – SHAWN HILL for moving the field without the skippers knowledge only to find the next shot go straight down the throat of the space vacated, the skipper was not best pleased.
