In the beautiful surroundings of Toddington Manor in Bedfordshire Wash achieved a comfortable 45 run victory against new opponents, Gardeners C.C. However, for much of the afternoon, so happy an outcome seemed a distant prospect as Washington struggled with the bat in the face of some accurate bowling, particularly from Radesh (3-9). Chris Webb (2) was bowled with the score on 10, and when Hitchcok (3) and Sandeep (0) followed, Wash were rocking on 25-3. Dale Bracegirdle batted patiently, but when he departed for 25 and was quickly followed by Windust (11), half the team were back in the hutch with just 58 on the board. It needed some magic from one of Washington’s Aussie irregulars, George Hope, aided and abetted by visiting middle order stylist, Pete Grzonka, to pull things round for the Wash. In a fine display of controlled batting, Hope smashed 85 not out, and with Grzonka contributing 25, the pair added 81 for the 6th wicket. And even better was to come as Marty Bock (28 not out) picked up where the departing Grzonka left off, and helped add 70 runs in the last 10 overs. With 200 in the bank off their 40 overs, Wash took tea in good spirits, and that mood brightened quickly as Sandeep (2-22) raced in to take a brace of wickets on his debut. Bock (2-21) chipped in with another pair, and then Eric Stoughton got into the act, picking up three wickets for thirty-three runs in another fruitful spell of spin-swing. Only Lim, left stranded on 49 at the end of the innings put up any sizeable resistance, and Dale Bracegirdle wrapped up proceedings with 2 overs of left arm spin which earned him the figures 2-2. So, an excellent afternoon for Wash, notable for promising debuts by Sandeep and Kiwi Windust, and for a tremendous new Oppo who will hopefully become a permanent part of the fixture list.
