Sunday 18th July 2004 vs Sundowners C.C.

A Washington Sundown

Washington C.C. 179
Sundowners C.C. 180-4

Sundown; lights out; goodnight. Washington’s hopes of another victory away from the leafy suburbs of N8 came a cropper on Sunday as they were worsted by the Sundown Specials at Woodside Park. Despite a magnificent innings of 85 from Dale Bracegridle – whose defence is so lock-tight that he should be called Dale the Yale, and whose batting is so reliable that he might consider changing his name to Dale Neverfail - Wash were unable to post a sufficiently big total to seriously discomfort their opponents. The home team duly romped to victory.

Washington’s day began badly when they lost two quick wickets. Paul Irons cracked his first ball for 4, but added only one more before becoming the first of four victims for long-haired fast-bowling tyro Dominic Pilgrim (4-48); John Roche then padded up to a straight one, and Wash were 13-2.

Gary Evans was next to go, bowled by the Big P for 2, before Bracegirdle and Richard Jones (15) restored some stability to the innings, adding 43 for the fourth wicket. Shaun Phelan (15) and Bracegirdle then looked to be batting Wash right back into the match taking the score to 140 and encouraging thoughts of a total in the region of 200. Both, however, fell within the space of a few balls and Wash were stuttering on 142-6.

Matthew Cragoe (10) and Justin Gurney (28) then added 35 for the 7th wicket, but when the skipper was stumped by Mick McGowan off the evergreen Dave Cattell (3-45) with the score at 178, the game was nearly up. Wash added only one more, and took tea contemplating a defence of 179.

The foundation of the Sundowners’ reply was an opening partnership of 101 between Tony Medlicott (65) and skipper Mike Herlihy (31). Washington’s bowlers strained every sinew in their attempts to dislodge or otherwise disrupt the opening pair, but the most that came their way was a half chance. Medlicott slashed the ball through the covers but wasn’t held. However, aficionados of Washington cricket will understand from the comment ‘Jimmy Wood might have caught it’ that this was a half chance of the very halfiest quality.

Medlock was finally found out by Gurney, bowled around his legs – think Gatting and Warne – and Herlihy was very well caught by Chris Davies off Eric Stoughton. There was a further wicket for each bowler, courtesy of a straightforward catch by Evans and a smart piece of stumping by Roche, but the end came in a welter of blows from Steve Golding (22) and Lou Vassay (34), leaving Sundowners victorious by 6 wickets.

‘We gave it a shot and never gave it up: I can’t ask more of the lads than that’, was the comment of Washington’s disappointed skipper afterwards: ‘we’ll be looking for a different result in three weeks when we get them back to North Midd.’

Should be a good contest.

Washington: Gurney (c), Roche (+), Irons, Roche, Evans, Phelan, Jones, Cragoe, Persaud, Davis, Stoughton.

Man of the Match: Dale the Yale Kit: Paul Irons: an unusual ‘blank day’ for Mighty.
