Archway Graces C.C. | 114-3 (21 overs) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The unseasonable summer rain washed out play at North Middlesex when Washington’s game against Archway Graces was beautifully poised and promised a thrilling finish. Washington, having won the toss, scored 242 in their allotted 42 overs. Archway, however, took up the challenge, and when the heaven’s opened after tea, had reached 114-3 off 21. If the odds slightly favoured Washington, the asking rate of just under 7 an over was gettable as long as wickets didn’t fall. The match might have been a lot closer had the visitors’ fielding been more disciplined. Washington’s total was boosted by an extraordinary 44 extras, including no fewer than 18 wides. A side has to bowl pretty well to carry that kind of deficit, and as it was, Archway felt the full force of Washington’s in-form batters. The early dismissal of Tony Harris (2) only brought Paul Irons into the fray earlier than expected. He added a thrilling 119-runs for the second wicket with Pete Demetri (58) and another 69 for the third with David Gluckman (25) before being bowled. Steve Brown then chipped in with 19 and John Roche quickly accumulated another unbeaten 14 in what is turning into something of a golden season for the Wash keeper. All Washington’s principal bowlers got a chance to turn their arms over before the rain intervened. Peter Kloss and skipper Justin Gurney each bagged a scalp, but the pick of the attack was Aussie seamer Richard Jones who picked up 1-12 from 4 overs. Archway batted with some aplomb, however, and when the match was abandoned, Bell (49 not out) and Caribbean sensation Nenetto (27 not out) were beginning to suggest that the result was anything but a foregone conclusion. As it was, the weather was the winner and the two sides must await the return fixture in August to settle the issue.
