Sunday 30th May 2004 vs Arkley C.C.

Wash Crash

Washington C.C.
Arkley C.C.

Washington tumbled to only their second defeat of the season at the hands of Arkley at North Middlesex on Sunday.  Put in to bat on an unreliable surface, they were restricted to 152-9 in their 40 overs, a total which their guests reached for the loss of only two wickets.

Although the sky was overcast and there was a strong wind blowing directly across the ground, the day began brightly enough for Washington’s batsmen.  Donald Campbell (21) and Matthew Cragoe (30) added 44 for the first wicket at around 5 an over, and when the former was removed, John Roche (7) came to the crease and kept up the tempo.

The departure of Roche, however, signalled a terrible batting collapse as four wickets went down for just 8 runs: Simon Hollins (1), skipper Justin Gurney (0), Marty Bock (0) and Taran Persaud (0) came and went in quick succession.  Richard Jones (8) steadied the ship, but with the score on 91, Cragoe’s long vigil ended when he contrived to play around a full toss and Peter Kloss was yorked first ball.  Jones was caught and bowled soon afterwards, and with the score at 103-9, an early wrap seemed likely.

However, Shaun Phelan (42 not out) and Eric Stoughton (3 not out) then combined to add an unbroken 49 for the last wicket:  Pheland struck 7 4s, and by dint of some judicious farming of the strike, and some cat-like running from the Smooth one, Wash saw out their overs and posted a semi-defensible target.

Hope continued to burn awhile longer in Washington breasts as Bock (0-13) and Kloss (0-11) each produced an excellent opening spell at the start of Arkley’s reply.  Just 25 runs came off the first 10 overs;  crucially, however, no wickets fell, and Arkley, with Spellane (50 not out) in control throughout, gently accelerated towards their target.

Wash did winkle out a couple:  Persaud took a good catch to give Gurney(1-38) a scalp, and Hollins capped an impressive performance in the field by holding on to a rocket at wide mid off, to give Jones (1-26) a deserved wicket.

But it wasn’t to be Washington’s day, and at 6.45, Anson (33 not out) hoisted Gurney into Calthorpe and sealed the game for the visitors.  Perhaps the pitch didn’t play up quite so much when the sun came out and the wind died down in the afternoon, but by common consent, Wash lost this game much earlier during their disastrous middle order collapse.
