Saturday 14th June 2003 vs Hackney Downs C.C.

Wash lose bad tempered affair

Washington C.C. 241-6
Hackney Downs C.C. 242-1

Washington came undone against Hackney Downs in an ill-tempered match which skipper Terry Tidey later described as ‘deeply unpleasant’.

Washington’s batsmen prospered on the artificial track, compiling a useful total of 240. Liam Chivers notched up a century which included 15 4s, and Tony Harris was also in fine form on his first outing this season, finishing with an unbeaten 47.

However, a young Downs side overhauled Washington’s total for the loss of only one wicket, claimed by Pete Grzonka (1-21).

There seems to be a moral lesson to be drawn from this match, more important by far than the simple matter of the result. A cricket field is a cricket field – whether in Hackney or anywhere else. Certain standards of behaviour and decorum apply universally once you step over the rope. There are no winners, only losers, if this basic rule is forgotten or ignored.
