Saturday 24th May 2003 vs Old Eastcotians C.C.

K-LOSSAL!

Washington C.C. 73
Old Eastcotians C.C. 69

Washington 73 Old Eastcotians 69

An inspired spell of bowling from Washington seamer Peter Kloss guided his side to an exceptional victory on Saturday.

Defending a small total of 73 was always going to be tough, but when Old Eastcotians got to within ten of their target with four wickets in hand, skipper John Roche pulled a bold stroke and recalled his opening bowler. In just 11 balls, Kloss dispatched the last four batsmen, and, remarkably, Washington had run out victors by four runs

Wash batted first and found going tough on a difficult wicket. They lost opener Dennis Edwards for a duck and despite a swashbuckling 26 from Aussie Brad Hitchcock, and 16 from debutant Pete Grzonka, saw the middle order dissolve in the face of accurate medium pace bowling from Hickson (3-25) and Daniel (4-28). Braddock (3), Persaud (1), Spriggens (10), Hood (0) , Roche (0), Martin (2) and Kloss (1) all failed to find their touch.

And when Old Eastcotians took their score to 40 for the loss of only one wicket, courtesy of Eric Stoughton (1-18), victory seemed a formality. However, Ben Spriggins (2-11) and Neil Martin (2-23) hauled Wash back into the game, the latter taking the vital wicket of Howley for 28.

This proved to be the game’s turning point, and when Roche called up Kloss, he dispatched the tail in record time, once even standing on the verge of a famous hat-tick.

‘That was a great team effort’, said the jubilant Roche afterwards, but added: ‘even in a team, there is room for an outstanding individual performance and Peter Kloss gave us that today in wrapping up a fabulous victory’.
