Sunday 31st August 2003 vs Archway Graces C.C.

Quin glitters in the Gloom

Washington C.C. 212-8 (40 overs)
Archway Graces C.C. 168-9 (40 overs)

A brilliant all round performance from Aussie star Alex Quin was the difference between Washington and Archway Graces on Sunday. In an otherwise tight game on an unreliable surface, he added an unbeaten 60 to his third five-wicket haul of the season to see Wash over the finishing line.

Pete Demetri won the toss and, as ever, elected to bat first; however, Grant MacDonald (4) quickly became the pitch’s first victim, edging a lifting ball to slip where it was brilliantly caught one-handed.

Matthew Cragoe (10) and David Walker (31) steadied the ship with a partnership of 36, and Walker and Steve Brown (9) then added a further 39 for the third wicket.

It was Walker’s first outing in a Wash shirt for two months, and he played what Mark Nicholas of Channel 4 would undoubtedly have described as a typically ‘nuggetty’ innings. However, he fell with the score on 90, and 10 runs later Paul Irons (15) had joined him: half the side were back in the hutch with only 100 on the board and 25 of the 40 overs gone.

A saviour, however, was to hand: Quin came in and thrashed a brilliant 60, including 9 fours, and with Demetri (6), Roche (1) Mick Kennedy (22) and Peter Kloss (11 not) took Wash over he 200 mark.

And it was Quin, too, who dominated the bowling. After a good tight opening spell from Gary Evans (0-33) and Peter Kloss (1-29) who bowled particularly well, Quin was introduced to the attack and immediately picked up a wicket, the first of three catches for Roche behind the stumps. Three other victims quickly followed, and with Graces 54-5, the game looked to be there for the taking.

However stubborn middle order resistance obliged Demetri to introduce the pacey Kennedy in the gathering dusk. He picked up 3-29, including a brilliant catch at first slip from Gary Evans to a ball he could scarcely see.

The result of the game was not in doubt after the Graces’ early collapse, but the home side batted out their allotted overs: Quin returned to take a fifth, jug-worthy wicket, and then the players trooped off to the brightly lit bar to enjoy the fruits of his success.
