Saturday 23rd August 2003 vs Abdul Aziz C.C.

Stoughton's Heroes pipped at the post

Washington C.C. 163 all out off 28 overs
Abdul Aziz C.C. 167 for 9 off 34 overs

The Wash travelled to Barnes to take on Abdul Aziz CC in a 35 over match fielding 3 debutants.

Skipper Eric Stoughton lost the toss and the Wash were asked to bat first on a very green and tufty wicket which looked dangerous to the eye.

Brad Hitchcock and Tony 'The Kiwi' Harris opened the batting and proceeded to make light of the pitch conditions.

Hitchcock(16) was bowled by a slower ball from Lavers(3-54) which brought Taran Persaud to the wicket to play his best innings of the season.

Tony 'The Kiwi' Harris(18) was caught off Leonard(2-21) and Dennis Edwards(0) was bowled by Arif(2-20).

While wickets were falling around him Taran Persaud(10) continued to frustrate the bowlers until one extravagant shot too many presented a simple catch in the outfield.

Ian Hillsdon(11) playing his last game for the Wash played some aggressive shots, until he was magnificently caught by Schwarz.

The Wash were losing wickets too quickly, however Craig Stakis playing his first game for the Wash played a very stylish innings with elegant drives and pulls which put some impetus into the run scoring.

Neil Martin(6) was controversially stumped,Gary Malcolm(0),AK(0) and Brandon Legg(6) were all comprehensively bowled.

When Eric Stoughton the No.11 went out to bat only 27 of the 35 overs had been bowled and with Craig Stakis having scored 69 runs, the job was to support the star man.

Unfortunately the very next over Stakis(69) was adjudged LBW and the Wash failed to bat out their allotted overs which ultimately would cost them dear.

TEA

After tea the Wash skipper requested a fast tight start from his opening bowlers and Neil Martin(2-23) obliged bowling Robinson with the very first ball of the Abdul Aziz innings, he was ably backed up by Stakis(1-25).

Abdul Aziz were finding runs hard to come by and wickets were falling at regular intervals.

AK(3-37) playing his first game for the Wash had Arif caught at slip by Hillsdon with his very first ball.

Ian Hillsdon(2-19) bowled Schwarz with his very first ball keeping the trend going and the Wash in the match.

Brandon Legg(1-18) making his debut and Gary Malcolm(0-17) maintained the pressure.

Abdul Aziz were 132-9 after 29 overs still requiring 32 runs to win,Leonard(46 not out) and Burrows(12 not out) survived being bowled;the No.11 claiming he was not ready;the wash skipper fielding at silly mid-on graciously accepted this claim allowing him to take guard again, and,in the 34 over Leonard was given not out to a very close LBW appeal,he went on to make the 8 runs Abdul Aziz required to win by one wicket.

The Wash skipper rued the fact that they never batted their full 35 overs and his generosity to the No.11 batsmen "Well this is social cricket" he was heard to say.

Stoughton was proud of his players, with 3 debutants the Wash gave an excellent account of themselves in this close encounter.

Man of the match.....CRAIG STAKIS Packing the kit..........GARY MALCOLM for getting lost in the field.
