Sunday 10th September 2000 vs Pacific C.C.

Washington C.C. 171 for 7
Pacific C.C. 172 for 4

Washington were swept to defeat by a whirlwind 72 not out from rookie Jim Davies in their big local derby game with Pacific on Sunday. Davies and Kiwi Chris O'Grady(25 not out) came together with their side in trouble at 66-4. But they carried the attack to the Washington, and put on an unbeaten 106for the fifth wicket to secure their side a well deserved victory, their first in this fixture for several seasons.
Wash skipper David Walker was naturally disappointed but said: 'You can't take anything away from them: they bowled well, fielded well and batted well - they deserved the result.'

It was Pacific's day from the start: they won a useful toss and quickly had Wash in trouble at 22-2. It needed an exceptional innings from opener Paul Swords to put Washington back on course. He batted two hours for 36, hitting two sixes, and sharing a vital fifth-wicket stand of 52 with Johnny Roche(8).

However, Pacific fielded well all day, with Aussie Matt Ralph taking four superb catches in the slips, and it required a magnificent late order charge from Richard Minion to take washington to tea on 171-7. He finished unbeaten on 42, including two huge sixes, having put on 59 for the seventh wicket with Alex McNellan (17 not). Mike Alexander was the pick of the Pacific attack, taking 4-41 in 13 overs.

Pacific's reply began briskly, with Ralph striking a confident 46. At the other end, however, wickets were falling. Jimmy Wood, Nick Wickers and Alan Moffatt all took excellent catches, and the departure of ralph with the score at 66 seemed to open the door for Wash to take control of the game. It was not to be. Terry Tidey bagged 2-31; Wood 1-58 and Minion 1-57, but the runs kept coming and Washington were sunk.

And, as Pacific's Peter Hollman said later, the result will add an edge to the meeting of the two clubs in the indoor league at Lord's this autumn.
