Sunday 22nd June 2003 vs Vagabonds C.C.

MICK THE MUNCH

Washington C.C. 229-5dec
Vagabonds C.C. 213-4

The Wash travelled to Bentworth in Hampshire looking for an elusive victory against a talented Vagabonds side.

The humid, thundery day did not look promising, and having lost the toss a hard day in the field was expected, however, surprisingly The Vagabonds asked Washington to bat first.

Captain,Justin Gurney, sent out Mick Kennedy and Grant McDonald to open the batting and they proceeded to take the attack to The Vag's opening bowlers.

After 12 overs The Wash were 59-0 and going along very nicely.

In the next over Geach bowling in-swingers picked up the wicket of McDonald(31)LBW,however the platform had been created for a very competitive score.

Mark Wittet playing his first game of the season was caught for 3 at mid wicket off Geach(2-47).

Now the scene was set for Paul Irons, who proceeded to treat the bowling with disdain, scoring 87 runs off 44 balls, managing to lose 4 balls over long on,such was the ferocity of his batting.

Mick Kennedy did not allow this to over shadow his fine innings, hitting a huge 6 over cow corner to reach his first 50 for The Wash.

Irons played on to one that nipped back, off Garton's(1-24) bowling,by the time he was back in the hutch,The Wash had 195 runs on the board and were looking to declare.

Mick Kennedy(66) was caught off Stuart(1-64) chasing runs and Brad Hitchcock(1), seeing two balls ,was LBW to Bowden(1-45)

David Gluckman(7not out) and Justin Gurney(17not out) made quick fire runs and The Wash declared at tea on 229-5 with the skipper very happy.

TEA

The Vagabonds opening batsmen started confidently, however Peter Kloss(1-34) had Munro(9) caught at square leg by a diving Grant Mcdonald, showing juggling skills worthy of a circus act.

Dixey the other opening bat was joined by Butler who started to take the attack to The Wash bowlers until Mark Wittet's(1-31) first ball of the season,a nice full toss on leg stump, was given the treatment by Butler(22),who expected 4 runs only to find Nick Tidey jumping high to his left, taking the fizzing ball in one hand and yelping with delight,"I hate you Butler!"

Clay came to the Wicket with the Vagabonds 95-3 and continued the attack with a quick fire 38 until Mick Kennedy(1-30) knocked back his middle stump with the perfect quick delivery.

Dixey continued, now at a slower run rate.Garton came to the wicket and started to push singles and two's to get the run chase back on track.

Dixey's(63)patience eventually tired with Nick Tidey(1-36) taking his deserved wicket, caught by Peter Kloss.

Justin Gurney(0-20)and Eric Stoughton(0-42) tempted the batsmen; however they managed to avoid the fielders.

Paul Irons(0-17) tried to unsettle the batsmen until the final over arrived with The Vagabonds requiring 23 runs to win.

With Mick Kennedy bowling the final over The Wash were confident that the runs would not be available, and so it turned out. The Vagabonds finishing a good chase on 213-4 with an excellent Garton(63 not out) and Jackson(9 not out).

An honourable draw and a great day in the sticks, captain Gurney was justly proud of the boys' performance.
