A good all round team performance saw a strong Washington team run out comfortable winners on Sunday against Grace’s. The batsmen got runs, the bowlers took wickets, the fielders held their catches, and there was even a juggling display on the boundary from Dennis Edwards as Washington eased home in the sunshine at North Midd. It was the kind of day when you want to win the toss. It allowed Wash first use of a flat, surprisingly slow track, and meant the Grace’s bore the brunt of the sun on an energy-sapping afternoon. Wash skipper Pete Demetri took full advantage. He reached his 50 in just 8 overs, and three figures in only 65 balls. When he fell to a good catch at long leg in the 24th over, for 107, the sense of surprise was palpable. Demetri had put on 95 for the first wicket with Matthew Cragoe (29), and a further 82 for the second with Grant Macdonald, who caned two sixes and five fours in an aggressive 41. When he departed, with the score at 187, things were looking bleak for Grace’s: however, they fought back. The hard-working Andy Quartermain (4-56) picked up the wickets of Brian ‘the Rhino’ White and Justin Gurney for 0 each, and Wash were suddenly shaky at 189-5. However, with Chris Doyle’s appearance, normal service was resumed. He took up pretty much where Demetri left off, and in 49 balls he raced to 74, an innings as pleasing to the eye as it was beneficial to the scoreboard. Another century seemed inevitable until he holed out to Richard Bilby, who picked up 3-26 and should perhaps have bowled earlier than he did. Wash declared with 294 on the board, and soon began turning this strong position into an unassailable one. Opening bowlers Peter Kloss and Gary Evans limited the Grace’s to just 23 off the first ten overs, and it became difficult to see how the visitors would get near their target. It was not until the run out of Kere (26) that the innings really got going. At this point Swinburne (41) Stockingler (34) and Mendes (30) all began to go for their shots and for a brief period, the Grace’s were in the hunt, as the asking rate dipped below 9 an over. Maintaining that kind of tempo over an extended period however, was always going to be difficult: in the event, a match winning, four wicket spell from the super swinger, Gary Evans (4-30), proved it impossible. There were wickets too for Gurney (1-49), Mick Kennedy (1-23) Doyle (1-28) and Edwards (1-3), while White took a well judged catch running back from cover to get rid of Grace’s skipper Curtis. For Demetri, a good day’s work: ‘let’s just say the sun shone’, he said. Wash: Demetri(*), Cragoe, MacDonald, Doyle, White, Gurney, Kennedy, Edwards, Roche(+), Evans, Kloss.
