Washington battled out a tough draw with Edinburgh University Old Boys side, Auld Reekers, at Alexandra Park on Sunday. Needing 179 for victory, Washington were 125-6 when bad light eventually brought play to a close. The Reekers are regular opponents for Washington in the MCC six-a-side indoor league, but this was the first meeting between the sides outdoors. The Scottish side put on a powerful batting display. They attacked the bowling from the first ball: openers Eliot (26) and Wood (19) prospered, putting on 36 for the first wicket, until a brilliant bit of fielding by Richard Minion ran out the latter. The Comer brothers then added 42 for the sixth wicket, and the Reekers declared at tea with 178 runs on the board. It was tough work for Washington's quarter of bowlers: Minion ended with 1-52, Wood with 2-37, despite bruising a hand, James Tapper 2-38; and Gary Evans 1-37. Washington's reply was notable for the fact that the whole team wore helmets after two players suffered head injuries in the previous game against Lord Gnome. Even then skipper Dave Walker (24) had to battle through a nasty blow on the hand, whilst putting on 50 for the third wicket with Alan Moffat (24). And in the fading light, David Gluckman (20 not out) and Gary Evans (12 not out) had to battle hard to keep Washington afloat. After the game, Walker said he was pleased with his team's performance; 'We were a little under strength in the batting department today', he said, 'but I thought our bowlers did well in the face of the best batting team we have faced this season'. Washington will be hoping that both Walker and Wood are fit for next Sunday's derby clash with Pacific.
