Washington were well beaten by old friends and arch rivals Pacific on Sunday. Despite winning the toss and electing to bat first, Wash mustered only 132; Pacific reached their target with only four wickets down and four overs to spare. It was all a big disappointment after the fireworks of last week. Skipper Pete Demetri said: ‘If we’d had 20 more we would have been competitive; 50 more I reckon we’d have won it’, but this was a day all Washington’s batsmen will want to put behind them as quickly as possible. On a wet pitch where the ball occasionally held up a little, patience was the key. Demetri himself was first to go, spooning a catch back to Pacific skipper Nigel Wilkinson in only the third over, but Wash didn’t learn from this dismissal and too many fell to rash shots after getting themselves in. Steve Brown (12), Matthew Cragoe (13), Paul Irons (20) and John Roche (11) all offered varying degrees of promise before succumbing. The only batsman to really show his worth was David Gluckman who played fantastically well for his 31, mixing stout defence with prudent aggression. At tea, Wash knew that an early breakthrough was essential. It never arrived. Pacific’s opening pair played with commendable restraint, letting the ball come on to them and playing off the back foot. By the time Irons (1-32) snaffled the first of them,, Shaun Cochrane (37), half the required runs had been scored. And though there were late wickets for Justin Gurney (2-26) and Cragoe (1-18), Guy Wiehahn (52) steered Pacific home with a calm and well-organised half century. One to forget for the Wash.
