Sunday 4th May 2003 vs Archway Graces C.C.

Wash win in the sunshine

Archway Graces C.C. 149-8 (40 overs)
Washington C.C. 150-3

Washington recorded their first win of the season on Sunday with an impressive all round performance against old rivals Archway Graces. A tight display in the field restricted the Graces to 149 in their 40 overs, and Wash reached their target with 7 wickets and ten overs to spare.

It all added up to a thoroughly pleasant afternoon for new club skipper Pete Demetri, who led the way with an unbeaten 75. ‘That was a bit more like it!’, he grinned after the match. And, indeed, it was.

Almost the only thing that went wrong for Demetri and his Washington side all afternoon was the toss, which they lost.

Given first use of a slowish batting track, Archway openers Parry (12) and Morris (15) made steady progress in the face of accurate bowling from Richard Minion and the lively Nick Tidey (1-10). After 15 overs, however, with the score at 32, Morris chipped Tidey to Danni Persaud at point and his partner soon followed.

Thereafter, Shahid (16) played some bright shots and Ball stroked the ball around elegantly for 45, but Washington’s bowlers kept the game tight. Terry Tidey (1-28) caused all the batsmen problems with his slow-medium lifters, while left-arm Aussie paceman Mick Kennedy (2-30) looked dangerous all afternoon.

Spinner Eric Stoughton (1-17) bowled smoothly and extracted plenty of turn, and Dave Walker, fresh off the plane from Thailand, took a wicket with his trademark ‘straight ball’ to end with figures of 1-22.

Demetri (2-2) brought himself on for a final over which saw 3 wickets fall, the last courtesy of some nice fielding in the deep from Nick Tidey.

It all meant that Washington were left to take tea contemplating a target of 150, and the skipper himself got Washington’s reply off to a flyer. Despite being struck on the crown by opening pacer Ken Jones (an incident which still saw Demetri scamper through for two byes), Demetri played a dazzling array of strokes, and was particularly strong off his pads.

He and Matthew Cragoe (22)added 74 for the first wicket in 19 overs, before the latter was left stranded after coming down the wicket to leg-spinner Steve Hooper (1-33)and smartly stumped by keeper Morris.

In the next 5 overs, Demetri put on another 41 with Alex Quin (28). Quin hit the ball ferociously and looked likely to win the game on his own until he played over a full length delivery from Gardiner.

The same bowler accounted for Persaud (0) in the same over, but that was the Graces’ last success. Walker (8 not out) joined Demetri and played a steady supporting role while his skipper first went to 50 and then led his side safely on to their target.
