After back-to-back wins against Ludlow in 2002, Washington were well and truly trounced in their opening fixture of the new season at Salisbury Hall on Sunday. Ludlow chose to bat first on winning the toss in a 35 over game and after a brisk start on a hard track with variable bounce, Terry Tidey and newcomer, Kiwi Neil Martin got amongst the wickets. After 17 overs, Ludlow were 51-6, but a spirited partnership of 48 between Ludlow (17 not out) and Leagas (40) helped the local team post a respectable total. Tidey (3-9) and Martin (3-17) were the pick of the Washington attack, the other wickets being shared between Eric Stoughton (2-22), skipper Pete Demetri (1-38) and Nick Tidey (1-19). The Washington fielding was good and Brad Hitchcock excelled with two fine catches. Three an over seemed eminently gettable, despite the testing wicket, but Ludlow's opening attack of Hipwell and Haines bowled exceptionally well at the start, exploiting the variable pitch conditions. Wash opener Alex Quin was out to the second ball of the innings, Steven Brown went in the 4th over and by the 13th over, Washington were 19-5. The only batsmen to occupy the crease for any length of time was opener, David Gluckman, who was eventually 7th out in the nineteenth over. The late order batsmen did what they could and managed to take the score past 50. It was a poor batting performance with no batsman getting into double figures. Hipwell ended with brilliant figures - 4-7 in 7 overs - and the high point of his spell was a superb slower ball to get John Roche lbw.
