Washington fell foul of the weather gods on Sunday. The same storms that doused Lord's and brought the Nat West Final to a premature conclusion washed away the second half of their game against South London outfit Kingstonian.
And it was all the more frustrating for Wash as victory seemed likely after an excellent batting performace.

Openers Paul Swords (12) and David Gluckman (18) provided the foundation for an exhilerating third-wicket partnership of 82 between Washington's Merseyside pair, Alan Moffat(31) and skipper Dave Walker (57).

And with contributions down the order from Nick Wickers (13), Nick Taylor (10), and Taran Persaud (5), Wash had racked up a commanding score of 176-8 by tea. Contractor, with 5-24, was the home side's most successful bowler.

But then the heavens opened and the match was literally washed away from the North Londoners grasp.

It was especially frustrating for leading-wicket taker, Jimmy Wood. The fiery Scot, who has already bagged 33 scalps this season, was in hopes of making substantial progress towards his main goal of 50 wickets for the season.

'I had the scent of a rout in my nostrils', he said, ruefully, as the rain tipped out of the sky.

Skipper Walker will hope that next weekend's weather allows his strike bowler to get some overs in before the club's second meeting with arch rivals Pacific in a fortnight's time. However, as Sunday's events proved, the batting is in pretty good shape.
