Saturday 10th August 2002 vs Bedfont 62 C.C.

Ice cool Alex gives Wash a safe landing

Bedfont 62 C.C. 130-6
Washington C.C. 131-5

Washington cruised to an easy victory on Sunday thanks to a towering innings of 94 from Aussie debutant Alex X. Almost single handedly, he took apart Bedfont’s attack and saw Wash home with six overs to sapre.

Bedfont had bated first on their home ground under the wing of Heathrow Airport, but never fond scoring easy. Terry Tidey – just recovering from a painful shoulder operation – bowled twelve overs for a miserly 18 runs, and young pace tyro, Nick Tidey grabbed a wicket during a hostile opening spell. However the destroyer in chief – as so often for the Saturdays – was Gary Malcolm, who added to his season’s bag with another three.

It all meant that Washington’s batsmen had victory in their sights from the off. Alex X stroked the ball to all corners of the ground in an imperious display of batsmanship, and found good support from fellow Aussie Brad Hitchcock (12).

A late flurry of wickets when every batsman decided to ‘win it with a six’ made the final result a little more palatable for the home side, but in truth, this was an easy win for the Wash.
