Sunday 6th August 2000 vs Walthamstow Horiztls C.C.

Washington C.C. 170 for 6
Walthamstow Horiztls C.C. 173 for 8

Washington were flattened in a tense last ball thriller against Walthamstow Horizontals on Sunday. With one ball remaining, the East London outfit required two runs to win: a swipe outside the off-stump brought them four and victory.
It was a fitting end to an exciting day of cricket which began with Washington losing the toss and batting. The highlight of their innings was a brilliant 71 from Aussie opener Pete Demetri, who received solid support from Dave Walker (10), Steve Billows (10) and Paul Swords (10).

After his departure, David Gluckman (24 not out) and the ever robust Justin Gurney (30 not out) added 50 for the 7th wicket, which allowed Walker to declare at tea with a competitive170 runs in the bank.

It wasn't quite enough. The Horizontals carried the attack to Washington and a third wicket stand of 62 for the third wicket between the gutsy Chris Peratides(47) and Massari (29) gave them an edge that Washington were never able to blunt.

Jimmy Wood (2-53) bowled his heart out, and Justin Gurney (3-61) grabbed three vital wickets for 61 runs, but the Horizontals kept their target at around 5 an over throughout the closing overs, and deservedly took the honours at the death.

'A great end to a great day's cricket', was skipper Walker's post-match comment.
