Aussie batting star Pete Demetri led Washington to a thrilling victory against Hampshire outfit Vagabonds on Sunday. His 69 not out formed the centre piece of an impressive all-round team display which saw Washington win by a four-wicket margin. Skipper Dave Walker was delighted: 'That was brilliant', he beamed: 'We were at something like full strength today and it really showed. We bowled and fielded really well and were worthy winners'.
 | test | Walker had won the toss and asked the home side to bat. With half the Vagabonds back in the hutch for just 51, this looked like pretty good business from the skipper, Richard Minion (2-22) and Terry Tidey (3-31) causing the damage.
However a lusty 45 from Guy Parker took the home side over the 100-mark, and Washington had to dig deep. Alex McNellan (2-49), Jimmy Wood (1-20) and Justin Gurney (1-19) kept attacking and with the aid of some brilliant Washington ground fielding notably from McNellan and Wood (with 3 catches) and Dennis Edwards limited the target to 143.
Washington's reply was based around Demetri's brilliant knock. In profitable partnerships of 42 with Steve Billows(13) and 35 with David Gluckman (8), Demetri steered the Washington ship within sight of port: a few stout blows from Gurney (13), and some typical one-day scampering from Wood (10 not out), and their first victory over the Hampshire side was in the bag.
