Sunday 16th September 2001 vs North Enfield C.C.

Team spirit

Washington C.C. 203 for 8
North Enfield C.C. 176 all out

After a very sombre week with thoughts of the atrocities in America, Washington Cricket Club kept up their winning streak. Another closely fought contest saw Wash home to a 27 run victory against new opposition, North Enfield.

The day didn't start out well for Washington, as a car breaking down meant that over a third of the team weren't there at the start. So with a reduced side batting was the only option. McDonald (39) and Demetri (28) didn't have a care in the world as they set about the bowling attack. In a stand of 62 in less than 9 overs. Boyd (27) was also in aggressive mood and kept the quick temp going, hitting a big 6 in the process.

A slight wobble in the middle order slowed Washington down but great batting from Edwards (20) and Hitchcock (28) got things going again with a stand of 31. Both men were hitting the ball hard and far as well as running well between the wickets which was frustrating the opposition.

Washington still had Gurney (18) and Minion (17) to come in with 4 overs to go and soon followed the example of the batsmen before them by getting quick runs, to take the team to 203 off of their 35 overs.

North Enfield soon showed that it was a very good batting track by laying waste to Washington's leading wicket taker. Wood was hit for 15 in one over by some very aggressive batting from MacMurdie (33), but got his revenge by trapping him lbw. Minion was carrying on from where he left off the week before. Bowling within himself he was very accurate and didn't give much away and clean bowled the other opener (Astwell) for 15.

Gurney's first ball will be remembered by many as Wood took a superb running catch over his shoulder. Gurney finished with 1 for 37 off of his 7. Crossley bowled tight and was unlucky to finish wicketless but his 7 over for only 26 runs were vital in the game.

At 122 for 3 North Enfield would have fancied their chances off winning the game, but they hadn't reckoned on Toby Reisz. Bowling for only the second time this year he was the most economical of the day, his use of flight and spin really kept the opposition thinking and deservedly finished with 2 for 24 off of 6 overs.

Most notably he got Miller (52) caught by Wood in the deep, which turned the game back in Washington's favour.

Wood came back to finish off his overs, and bowled well to get a second with Orton (36) caught by Reisz and finished with figures of 2 for 55

This just left Minion to come and win the game for the second week running. With North Enfield chasing hard now his accuracy paid dividends in the fading light. Unfortunately Lowe top edged a ball into his chin and had to retire, but this only stopped Minion from getting a second consecutive 5 wicket haul, as he finished with 4 for 29.

Demetri was skipper for the day and was understandably delighted. "We had a very good young team out today. The out fielding was exceptional, we batting hard and even when they came at us all guns blazing, we kept our heads and bowled really well."
