Sunday 2nd September 2001 vs Archway Graces C.C.

Down to the wire

Washington C.C. 194 for 9
Archway Graces C.C. 190 for 7

Wash came out on top in a nail-biting, forty-overs-a-side thriller on Sunday. With the last light of an autumnal evening fading fast, Archway Graces needed 11 runs for victory when the last over began; five runs from the first two deliveries set them on course, but Gary Evans kept his cool and the next four balls yielded just one single. Wash had made it.

‘A fantastic game’ was excited skipper Dave Walker’s breathless comment afterwards: ‘we kept our nerve and just about deserved to win it’.

It was a great result for Wash who had lost the toss and been asked to bat first on a green, fast-paced wicket. And the ball did plenty early on, with Nazmul (2-30) and Ken Jones (2-22) getting movement and bounce.

Matthew Cragoe (46) and Dave Walker (3) added 30 for the first wicket but then wickets began to fall regularly. However, the powerful Justin Gurney, (28) helped stop the rot, easing Wash past the hundred-mark, and then Johnny Roche (37) struck a series of massive shots, as he and Cragoe added 53 for the sixth wicket.

Both batsmen fell with the score in the 160s, but Washington’s tail wagged: Evans (10), Paul Irons (11 not out) and Jimmy Wood (6 not out) all chipped in, and Wash took tea with a healthy-looking 194 to their credit.

The Graces got off to the worst possible start as Irons (2-28) snaffled two early wickets, but then the home side recovered. Morris (54) and Parry (58) added 110 for the third wicket, and the game seemed to be swinging decisively in their favour until Gurney (1-24), who extracted massive turn form the wicket all afternoon, managed to get rid of Morris.

The Graces still needed only 5 an over and it was essential that Wash get rid of Parry if they were to have any chance. Enter Jimmy Wood. Bowling at high speed in deteriorating light, he knocked over Parry and bagged two other scalps in just 8 balls to finish with 3 for 23. Cragoe (1-23) grabbed a wicket in the penultimate over, and the stage was set for Evans’ heroically cool nerves to see Washington home in the twighlight.
