Washington ran out convincing winners in this 35-over friendly at Alexandra Park on Sunday. In the steady rain that persisted all afternoon, Washington won the toss and bowled their opponents out in just 26 overs for 142, a target they overhauled with four wickets and seven overs to spare. It was a disappointing end for a youthful Littleton side which had started well. Saif (25) and Saqib (14) put on 44 for the first wicket, before Richard Minion (1-22) had the latter brilliantly caught down the leg-side by keeper Phil ‘the Cat’ Coleman. That was the first scalp in an excellent afternoon’s work from man-of-the-match Coleman, who also bagged two sweet stumpings off Kit Cooper (2-42) later in the innings. For the rest, Wash bowled tightly, with skipper Jimmy Wood juggling his bowlers cleverly to maintain maximum pressure. Only Naved, with a somewhat exotic 30, really got to grips with the Washington attack, and all the bowlers finished with smiles on their faces, Wood gabbing 2 wickets for 38, David Ellis one for 20, and Gurney 2-11 in only 3 overs. Washington’s innings began steadily with Pete Demetri (35) and Dale Bracegirdle (18) mastering the slippery conditions to add 49 for the second wicket. However, when Demetri was fifth out with the score at 88, the match might still have swung either way. In the event a magnificent partnership of 54 for the sixth wicket between Coleman (34) and Minion (27 not out) saw the Wash through to the brink of victory: only when the scores were level did Coleman fall to a catch at the wicket. A wide delivery three balls later secured Washington their victory. Skipper for the day Wood pronounced himself 'very satisfied' with a solid all-round team performance: 'the weather was a great leveller,' he said: 'but the way the runs and the wickets were distributed showed that everyone chipped in.'
