Sunday 17th June 2001 vs Old Hendon C.C.

Sunshine after rain

Old Hendon C.C. 147 all out
Washington C.C. 149 for 3

Washington demolished Old Hendon after many thought the game would not go ahead because of the torrential rain the day before.

Washingtons strong team soon got on with things as Minion and Wood both got early wickets, McDonald taking a forward diving catch.

Washington kept taking wickets at regular intervals and if it hadn't been for Hendon's top batsman (Heavy 75 not out) things would have been over much sooner.

Wood was replaced by Evans who suprisingly took his time to find his line and length, but unsuprisingly once he had took two good wickets finishing with 11-1-38-2. Minion was finally replaced after a great spell of 13-5-27-3 by Tim Sparks who was very unfortunate to leave wicketless after some good bowling. Demetri was on hand to help himself to 3 close in catches and Evans took a great tumbling catch after Wood came back on, finishing off the innings with an in-swinging fast yorker to give him figures of 13.4-3-35-4.

So with Old Hendon making 147 all out and with Demetri opening the innings the bowlers could put their feet up knowing that things would be safe. Even they were a little surprised with the easy that Washington took the victory. Even after they had lost McNellan and McDonald (both for 5) to leave then on 49 for 2 that just meant that Dale Bracegirdle could come in and demolish the bowling attack. Demetri and Bracegirdle put on 95 and took them to with 5 runs of victory before Bracegirdle was stumped for 61 trying to hit his 5th six to win the game. Fittingly Demetri hit a four to win the game and finish with 67 not out, his third fifty of the season already.

Skipper Walker was obviously delighted and quick to praise all his players. "The Aussies had a great day for us, all our catches and the majority of our runs coming from them. It's a good thing that we have Wood and Minion wrecking havoc with the ball to restore some British pride!"

"But seriously, I just hope that they all are in such good form next week against the Vagabonds, they are a very good strong team and we will have to play at our best then as well."
