Washington C.C. | 97 all out | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Bank holidays once again hit Washington’s fixture with Cavendish. Yet with so many first team members away, a second string team so very nearly snatched a draw. Cavendish won the toss and elected to bat and soon showed why. T Hurst was the main stay of the Cavendish innings scoring 63 runs with I Cooper expensively dropped twice in the same over while on 0, going on to make a quick 37. James Wood (3-65) was the main wicket taker with Matt Hudson (2-6) geting his first wickets for Washington. Newcomer Rupert Pyrah bowled economically without any luck, while both Tideys, Terry and Nick, kept things tight. Washington were very pleased to keep Cavendish down to just 165 from 49 overs and were looking forward to a bat of a good wicket. Pete Demetri (29) got Washington off to his customary great start, but some fine bowling from the Hertfordshire outfit kept the scoring rate down. David Gluckman was his resolute self at the other end, nicking the singles where he could. After Demetri fell to a brilliant leg-side stumping by Cooper, however, Washington were really only looking for the draw. Rod Smith looked comfortable until being given out lbw for 10. Then T. Hurst rounded his great day off, bagging six Wash wickets for just five runs: Washington were holding on by their fingertips for a draw and all but looked to have secured it until, 4 balls from the end of the game,Bryceland bowled Wood. David Gluckman, the skipper for the day, was in philosophical mood after the match. “I though we bowled and fielded well', he said: 'keeping Cavendish below 200 was a great effort, but we were lacking 2 or 3 key batsmen and it made all the difference. It was a case of so near yet so far'.
