Washington Cricket Club - History

History

There is some debate as to the true foundation date of the club. One view is that it was started in 1968, while another suggests 1973. There is support for the latter, as the 25th anniversary tour took place at the end of 1998.

Founder member was Ziggie Holder, a Trinidadian by birth, who now lives in retirement in Padstow, with another ex Washington member, Derek Woods.

Most of the archive material exists from the summer of 1982, when three new members joined the club, David Walker, Alan Moffat and David Gluckman. They proceeded to rebuild Washington Cricket Club, with the able help of four men who had played for the club in earlier times, Toby Reisz , Mick Nolan, Mukesh and Rajesh Sachania. Mick and Rajesh have moved out of the area, Mukesh plays rarely, but Toby remains an active member of the club. Two other founder members were Nick Nicholson, sadly passed away a few years ago and Les 'Refrigeration' Nelson, who has disappeared from view, but shows up at the Washington when least expected.

The Washington, like many of its opponents who play friendly club cricket, is based on a local institution, in this case The Washington pub, situated on the corner of Belsize Park Gardens and England's Lane in London NW3. The current publican, Terry Tidey, is an active player for the club, and he and his wife Kate are patrons. Their two sons, Nicholas and Robert, have both played for the club on occasion, and it is hoped that they will become active members when they reach drinking age.

The club has a regular fixture list, and many of our opponents have been playing us for years. They too are based on local institutions, groups of friends or even religious groups, though many have evolved and enjoy only tenuous connections with their origins. PACIFIC CC, for example, were based on the old record company, past opponents, VANDEN PLAS, were originally in the motor industry, LORD GNOME arose out of early Private Eye and GANESH were a religious group.
