Stu 'Swampy' Marsh reports:

The ground was in pretty good nick when we turned up, but Brian, resident grounds keeper was nowhere in sight. Apparently, he was travelling with North Middlesex CC for an away fixture. When the lad attending the shop phoned him to pass on my request for confirmation of which field we were playing on, the reply came back that he “couldn’t give a flying f$%k”. I was told that he was having some sort of barney with the operators of the club. Anyway, we ended up on the lower and smaller ground, next to the houses where several balls would end up during the course of the afternoon, never to be seen again.

Mitchell (5-0-18-0) and Creed (4-0-35-0) opened the attack and both were slightly unlucky; the openers were trying to hit everything and early on, not timing a whole lot. Eventually, Donavan (109 out of a total of 155) would open his shoulders to punish me (5-0-48-0) on his way to a fast century. The Wash were looking at a big total to chase. With only 2 wickets down at drinks and Donavan scoring freely, Max Murrain (8-2-21-4) continued with great energy, as either medium pacer or spinner, and added this – huge - wicket soon after drinks. We hoped they had no more like him. They didn’t, and wickets then started to tumble in quick succession. Nick Kripps (5.3-1-23-4) tempted many loose shots, and was ably supported by Tom Brotherhood behind the stumps who effected several stumpings, some not paid. Josh Brookes rounded out the bowlers with a couple of very tidy overs and took a great slo-mo catch and mid-wicket.

Steady start was the order from Murrain after a reasonable tea.

Matt Holt (yes, you read that correctly) and Tom Brotherhood opened the batting against Donovan again, who also bowls pretty well. Holty looked in great touch but got caught short for 8. Meanwhile, Tom set about building an impressive innings with some superb strokes all around the ground on the way to his first 50 for the Wash. He ended on 78, not long after taking a club bat as replacement for his own which snapped clean in two during a lusty pull shot. Molloy mis-hit and was caught and bowled, and Brookes was out LBW first ball, bringing Williams to the crease who supported Tom well and made a nice 16 of his own. Brian with his new batting stance up next and looked fairly solid until he was stumped. Marsh (6no.) and Murrain (14no.) then hung around for the final overs and saw the Wash home with 6 overs to spare.

Maxxy, beaming, was quoted as saying: “They shouldn’t have joked that I was from Yorkshire… that really got me fired up… which led to that killer wicket of Big Donvan… and that was it!”

MoM: A Murrain / Brotherhood combo deal!
