Sunday 31st August 2014 vs Agricola C.C.

Solid victory for Clint’s first game in charge

Agricola C.C.
Washington C.C.

The Washington scored a historic victory in Chiswick against Agricola CC, a team with its origins in the Ministry of Agriculture (now called Defra). The game was historic because it was the first time that Clint Dugmore skippered the side.

It was a superb day out in west London at the King’s House grounds by the Thames at Chiswick, warm with a gentle breeze. The grounds are superbly well equipped and administered. For plane watchers it was a dream come true, with jets cruising directly overhead every 90 seconds or so. For those who were there for the cricket, the pitch was absolutely superb, straight and true, with a nice outfield with nothing more than goose dung to be concerned about.

Agricola won the toss and chose to bat first. The Wash opened with Max & Luke, who both bowled tightly and picked up a wicket each. Stu, Nick and Walshie bowled well before Clint brought himself on. He bowled superbly in front of his Dad & his partner, as well as Karen, taking three wickets. The opposition were bowled out for 142, which seemed a bit light for the conditions.

Following a decent lunch, an auspicious sign appeared in the sky – a 747SP, one of just 45 built. It was a shortened version of the venerable 747 (47 ft shorter) designed for ultra long range and short field performance. Kiwi & Shyam (with his very pregnant wife, and mother-in-law watching) set about the task, setting a solid platform with a partnership of 51. However Kiwi fell for 24, and Guru was unfortunately run out cheaply. This brought Ash to the crease, and this time he was in a belligerent mood, carving the ball through the field superbly. Shyam fell for a very well constructed 44, but the Wash kept cool with first Clint followed by an injured Tom who helped bring home the bacon.

After the game, the Washington shared a few beers with Agricola on the terrace as the sun went down on the last day of summer.

Skipper Clint Dugmore commented: “Today we saw a brilliant effort from a well balanced side. The bowling was excellent, although we let their opener off the hook a couple of times with dropped catches. Our batting performance was a true team effort, with several good partnerships, and plenty in reserve. Well done to Shyam and Ash in particular. It was a pleasure to skipper the side, and I hope to do it again soon”.
